The most common types of cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine surgery in Belgium are: - Microdiscectomy (treatment of herniated or prolapsed disc)- Laminectomy (treatment of cauda equina and spinal stenosis) - Lumbar disc fusion, anterior or posterior, with or without disc prosthesis - Posterior selective rhizotomy removal (exeresis) of spine tumours Length of stay in the Belgian hospital varies from 5 days for a microdiscectomie to 9 days for a lumbar fusion, including revalidation. Pre-operative tests (X-rays, blood tests, etc., depending on the information supplied at enquiry or admission time) and examinations by the surgeon typically take place on the day of the surgery, or the day before. X-rays, CT or MRI scans and/or photographs are always be very useful for assessing your case, determining the exact surgery required and refining the price estimate. Please send us, if possible, copies of scans on CD's or digital pictures of X-rays together with you enquiry. Neurosurgery takes place in the A.Z. Sint-Lucas hospital in Ghent. Patients are usuallty admitted around 14:00 am on the day before surgery. Discharge is also around 2:00 pm. The Belgian hospital has a couple of rooms available for relatives (see "general information").
